A brand new world! The news stories reported a giant eruption in the Pacific, a volcano beneath the sea. The spewing lava is creating a new island. I recently returned from Hawaii and was made very aware that our earth is in continual process of creating the new. Poisonous gas spews from holes in the earth. Hot molten lava flows into the sea. Cooling produces beds of black—some gravelly and some like smooth soft Dairy Queen ice cream. Soon lime green specs appear—plants that find nutrition in the newly formed land. Then small trees and plants cover the surface still striated by sharp ridges. The land is becoming inhabitable. Eventually it wears and softens and becomes old, but that’s a long way off. I mention that because it seems Jesus’ answers to those who knew him reflect an idea of a new age. If creation reflects the Creator, newness is a part of the way we are.
So let’s imagine this new world, the one Jesus’ answers suggest.
Since the demons recognized Jesus’ personhood, evil is know for what it is and silenced. Can we draw that picture from this story?
Since parables were understood only by those committed to the Teacher, trust precedes knowledge. Is that true?
The humble are the greatest, forgiveness is endless, and all are fed. Can we believe in such a world?
The impossible is consumed in the mystery of the One revealed in Jesus. How to imagine such a place?
How does Jesus lead you to be a part of this new order?
Jesus I am silenced by the magnitude of the answers you give. Amen.
Blessings, Caroline
