NICODEMUS ASKS

John 3: 1-21

Nicodemus, a Pharisee, comes to Jesus in the night—a closet seeker perhaps. He affirms Jesus’ power as from God, Jesus, however, seems to perceive a large BUT. Jesus says according to John “No one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.”—a challenging statement it seems or one that hears the skepticism in Nicodemus’ comment. But Nicodemus continues to seek; he asks, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?”

Listen carefully to Nicodemus’ question. What does he reveal about where he lives? What realm of reality does he see as true? What does he ask?
Listen to your own heart. Let yourself live in this scene.

Jesus ignores the how question and affirms a different world. “I tell you”, he says, “no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of flesh is flesh, and what is born of Spirit is spirit.” Spirit born people are different; they know the light that Son of Man brings. Nicodemus still doesn’t understand. Do you?

Read slowly these words (John 3: 1-21). Familiar as they are try to hear them anew.
In your soul what do you hear? What do you learn of Jesus, of God? What would you like to say to Nicodemus? What would you like to ask Jesus?

Lord Jesus, sometimes we come to you in the light, sometimes in the dark of night. Thank you for receiving us whenever we come. Thank you for hearing our queries completely. Give us courage to hear your answers. Amen.

Blessings, Caroline
