THE QUESTION AGAIN

John 12: 27-36

Last we turn to John’s gospel and Jesus’ teachings to the crowds just before his death. Jesus as John knew him was well aware that he faced a painful death, but believed unequivocally that what happened to him would glorify his Father in heaven. The way to bring the defeat of the “ruler of this world” was for Jesus to die, to be lifted up. The crowds read scripture differently. To Jesus they said. “We have heard from the law that the Messiah remains forever. How can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” While we may not be troubled by the tradition inherited by the crowds who surrounded Jesus, perhaps we too wonder just who is this Jesus.

Is that the ultimate question? How will you hear an answer? What defines the way you know the truth of the answer?

The Jesus John portrays again takes the question to another level. Never really addressing the question asked, Jesus simply counsels those who are there to walk in the light while they have it with them. Learn so that you will become children of the light.

Imagine the light of God shining through the Son surrounding you and illuminating your path. See. Respond as you are led.

Sweet Jesus, your path was so painful and your followers so slow to understand. Forgive our foolish questioning. Help us to see. Amen.

Blessings, Caroline
