"IN ALL THINGS, ALWAYS SEEKING GOD" Lent Week 3

From the writer of the introduction: “We are each Web sites for the Church and we are posting the Word of god to the world every day.” (p. 30)
Email, Facebook, Twitter, Blogs— Influence today is spread via the Web. Those who know tell us that elections are now won, protests organized, nefarious schemes hatched, all by Web users. Without it things would be different. True or false, the Web certainly is a good metaphor for the Way, for the community of those who profess Christ, for the coming of God’s Kingdom. The name World Wide Web implies another metaphor and that’s where I start, for the WWW bares some resemblance to nature’s own spider web.

Spider webs are fascinating I think. We had for some time one woven across the two sets of bushes on either side of our front walk. Each morning I broke it unseeingly as I went to get the paper. Each day and night the spider apparently respun it. Persistence perhaps is a characteristic of those who build webs. My daughter took an amazing picture of a web occupying the corner of a rusty gate. A slight dew illuminated the fine strands which wove a masterful maze. Beauty in connectivity perhaps another feature we see in the spider’s work. The spider however spins his masterpiece not to be an object of amazement but to catch his prey. Food is his goal. Being where he is he waits to entrap the unsuspecting. Not clearly seen he has the advantage over passers-by and draws them in.

Perhaps there are ideas here to ponder. The Web is much like its namesake. It breaks and is rebuilt. Its breadth and complexity are beyond comprehension for most of us. It can be a trap or a source of sustenance. But our quote points us outward, reminds us of who we already are—places people come to Christ, spokespersons for Christ in the world. So…

What does our web site look like?
What do we post?

Merton says “We must in all things seek God…We seek God by surrendering ourselves…to the law of love which is implanted in every nature, and revelation of spiritual love in personal freedom.” Words perhaps to guide our musing about our site and prompting real creation of such.

Blessings, Caroline
