ADVENT WEEK 2 THOUGHTS

Seeing in the Dark

For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.
1 Corinthians 13: 12

Finally our eyes have adjusted; the darkness is not total. Watch as light seems so gently to come. Shadows appear; we can see at last. Close your eyes again and remember. Quiet your mind; be alert. Now open and see the darkened spaces, hear the silent room, feel the cold surroundings. Seeing in the dark is hearing, touching, sensing, and knowing in part. The terror diminishes but all is not clear.
How often we have known the struggle of seeing in the dark. How much we hope for a light, just a small ray to illumine our way. And when we wait our eyes reward us by seeing the shadows, feeling the surroundings, hearing the being. What do you barely see, hear? What does the dark reveal that daylight hides?

Remember, imagine the background the dark reveals.
Remember, imagine the hole where the image was.
Feel that which the light denies.

What does God wish you to see in the darkness?
Shadows on your soul—
Starkness of creation—
Deserts of longing—
Glimpses of glory—
Sins unconfessed—
