The first week of Lent! We begin our walk. We become one of those who are pulled by the itinerant preacher from Galilee. We have promised that we want to know him for we have questions to ask. Are we ready to start? Have we figured out why we travel with him? What about him intrigues us? Why would we want to ask him a question?
Maybe we should stop a moment and ponder. Why do we make this Lenten trek? What draws us to the Son of Man? What questions are we anxious to ask? What questions are forming in the back of our minds?
The most basic picture of Jesus’ ministry is in the synoptic gospels—Matthew, Mark, and Luke—so we begin there. As we scan through we find lots of questions both from Jesus and to him. The story of his preaching, healing, and exorcising takes him around Galilee and finally to Jerusalem. As we read we begin to form a picture of him. As we read we begin to have an idea of his message. As we read we can imagine having a conversation with him.
We’re interested particularly in how he answers questions, for eventually we want to ask ours. As we look at various incidents think about the kinds of questions he is asked. Maybe translate them into today’s world. See how Jesus answers. What does his answer or lack of one mean?
This week I’d like to look at times when those we might call seekers come to Jesus. Some come seeking cures for illnesses. Some come seeking information to decide if they will follow. Some come seeking answers to life’s major questions. Let’s join them.
Lord Jesus, we join who came to you seeking truth. We come seeking wholeness. We come seeking the One who called you his beloved son. Open our minds, warm our hearts, and inflame our spirits, so that we may truly listen. Amen.
Blessings, Caroline
