SEEKERS OF HEALING

Mark 1: 40-45; Matthew 15: 21-28
Today we begin to look at encounters Jesus had with those who sought something from the rabbi. As we listen to their conversations we too seek. We seek to know who is this preacher; we seek to know what questions this preacher will answer; we seek to know if we can approach him with our questioning.

Each seems very different. Each has his or her own particular need. Like us? Can we find anything that tells us who Rabbi Jesus is?

We begin with those who came seeking healing. A man with leprosy approached Jesus with the question “If you choose, you can make me clean.” Jesus answered, “I do choose.” and the leper was healed. Read the story in Mark 1: 40-45. Matthew (and Mark) tell the of the plea of a Canaanite woman who shouted at Jesus, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” Jesus ignored her! Find out how the story ends in Matthew 15: 21-28. What do we learn of Jesus from these encounters with seekers of healing?

Are we seeking healing? Do we have questions for Jesus about our wholeness, our family’s health, or our release from torment? What would you say to Jesus? Listen for the answer. What picture do you see of the Son of Man?

Lord Jesus, we seek your healing. We seek your mercy. We seek not only for ourselves but for those we know who hurt, who are tortured, who are broken. Make us instruments of your peace. Amen.

Blessings, Caroline
