The opening line from the writer of the introduction: “No sin is private, hurting no one but ourselves.” For me a troubling reminder and a startling but good way to begin the season of Lent. Merton continues, “We are involved in each other’s lives, not by choice but by necessity, for that is the way we are made.” What other response is there than that of the Psalmist, “O wash me, I shall be whiter than snow.”
And the words come, slowly, painfully, hopefully truthfully—
Sin again
...............and again
.................................and again...
I hurt you
...............you hurt me
.................................I meant to
but I didn't
................didn't know how much
................didn't think how it would
................didn't stop...
And you
................do you wish
................a world that revolves
................around you
................celebrating only you
................your goodness, your standing?
I do,
I wish I didn't...for
"....everybody is affected
.................................by the evil
..............................................that is in the heart of one..."
Awareness I hope is the beginning of conversion, repentance, turning around. The journey begins today. I pray God and you forgive.
Today begin the season of self reflection asking:
What sin infects your heart today? Where does it fly? Who are its victims?
Know that it is God that prompts this journey and that same God walks with you now.
Blessings
Caroline
