JOHN THE BAPTIST SEEKS

Luke 7:18-33
John the Baptist had a ministry and a following. Along the river Jordan, strangely dressed and living off the land, he called the people to repent. He created quite a stir. His critique of abuse, his accusation of sin, ran to the highest levels of power—the king himself. That landed him in jail, but not before he had baptized one Jesus of Nazareth. At the time he sensed that he was the one, Israel’s salvation. But days and especially nights in a dark prison bring doubts. Will the release, the rescue come in time? Will salvation be now? He asks his disciples to find out; ask Jesus he instructs “Are you the one, or are we to wait for another?”

Do you too wonder about Jesus? Do we really know the truth? Does the darkness seem to overcome the light? Are we fooling ourselves? Or is he the one?

Jesus answered: “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.” After John’s messengers had left Jesus praises John, but notes that he is of the old way. Luke describes the incident in chapter 7, verses 18-33. Read it all.

What sort of answer does Jesus give John? What does it mean? If you were John would you understand, be satisfied? Do we learn anything about questioning Jesus?

Jesus, are we too to judge by what we see and hear? It is so hard to know what is true. Teach us the meaning of your actions. Show us where you are today. Use our doubting. Amen.

Blessings, Caroline
