Mark 10: 17-23
A man came and knelt before Jesus. Who is this man? Why does he kneel? He asks, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” A serious question, one we all might ask perhaps if we thought we could. And he asked Jesus. Why ask Jesus? Why does this rich man think Jesus would know the answer? Why kneel?
Are you like this man? Is his question yours? Or are the other eternal truths you would ask? Would you bring them to an itinerant preacher, a prophet, a street-corner preacher, Jesus?
Jesus answered with a question: “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.” Jesus continues in dialogue apparently aware of who the man truly is. His final answer is most disturbing, and the man left grieving. Read the record in Mark 10: 17-22. Jesus’ answer this time left the seeker in tatters.
Are we prepared for the answer Jesus will give? Do we come with expectations based on our own sin? Apparently Jesus will answer the real question even if unasked. Are we ready?
Lord Jesus, forgive our efforts to manipulate, to hide, to pretend. Let our repentance be true, our turning toward truth real. Let the goodness that is God be the light that guides our way. Amen.
Blessings, Caroline
