Mark 10: 23-38; Luke 13: 22-29
Jesus continues the conversation with those around him after the rich man leaves (Mark 10: 23-28). The difficulty of Jesus’ answer becomes deeper. Finally the disciples exclaim, “Then who can be saved?” Asking Jesus seems to be too much; the answer impossible; the demands so outside what we expect. Luke records in 13: 22-29 that the crowd too asked, “Lord, will only a few be saved?”
Why only a few? What about our seeking brings us to this point? What blocks our way? Why do we not follow?
Jesus answers the disciples who are beginning to see that his way is not the way they know by asserting God’s authority. “For mortals it is impossible; for God all things are possible.” (Mk. 10:27) To the crowds concern he says, “Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.” (Lk. 13: 24) Perhaps this time we may wish the rabbi had not answered!
We who seek, what have we found? What is Jesus telling us about our lives? Can we begin to picture what it means to be a part of his kingdom?
Lord we have come. In varying degrees we have given ourselves to your way. Often we begrudge your demands; frequently we cannot see or hear you. Yet we still seek. When we walk away, bring us back, we pray. Continue to walk in our world, to bring God’s peace. Amen.
Blessings, Caroline
