THOSE WHO RECOGNIZE JESUS ASK

We begin the mid-week of the Lenten journey today, and the last week of our look at Jesus’ questioners in the synoptic gospels. The last group we look at are those who recognize Jesus as one sent from God. Amazingly the demons (those we would call mentally ill) name Jesus first as the Son of God, the Holy One. Their questions are those of existence and fear. The disciples, those who followed Jesus, and were privy to his purpose and teachings also ask. While knowing they still wonder, they still doubt, they still are unable to comprehend.

Perhaps these resemble more we who call ourselves Christians, followers of Jesus. But listen carefully to their questions. Following doesn’t seem to remove the need to ask. Following doesn’t seem to bring clarity. Following raises more wondering. Is that not how we are?

Dwell for a while with your commitment to Jesus. What questions do you have? What nags at your heart? What opens doors to doubt? Be honest with yourself. As a follower what holds you back?

This is a hard week. The call to discipline weighs on us. The questioning of Jesus’ followers trouble us perhaps, or perhaps our own questions worry us. Will we find answers; will we find peace?

Lord Jesus, we come this week tired. We walk but the trek seems long. We face this time our deepest selves. We face our own insincerity in following. We face our own unsuredness about who you are. Give us strength to continue the walk. Amen.

Blessings, Caroline
