First Week of Advent—Hope and Promise
Sunday, November 29, 2009
Engage in a time of Worship:
Gather around your Advent wreath.
Light the first candle.
Gaze into the light the candle gives.
Listen to the silence of the house.
Say:
We bear witness with the faithful of every time and place
to the coming again of our Lord,
the light of the world, the savior of humankind,
the prince of peace.
With Jeremiah and the prophets of Israel,
we await the promised salvation of the Lord,
and look for the coming of the one
who will bring justice and righteousness to the earth.
Read Jeremiah 33: 14-1
Let these words of hope and promise sink into your whole being. What is your hope? What is promised?
Hymn: “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”, verse 1
(sing or read)
O come, O come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel!
Lord we pray:
Lift our hearts, show us the ways of your coming. Bring your righteousness to our world. Let justice and freedom reign. Forgive our refusal to be your instruments of peace and justice. Save us from ourselves. Amen.
The blessing of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
be on us all, now and always. Amen.
Blow out the candles.
